Nevil Shute Norway lead a rich and interesting life, mostly centred around planes, boats and design. This book, in a lot of ways, doesn't do his life justice; he probably thought he had more years up his sleeve and he'd do a more comprehensive book later. Oh well. Many a slip etc. He died at 60 in '60, which was a real loss, because unlike many authors, the quality of his work didn't fall off with age.
This part of his life mostly covers the early design years when he was a 'computer' on the pre-war airship program and briefly mentions his time as a founding director of Airspeed Ltd, manufacturers of a pretty range of planes, most notably the Airspeed Oxford which was on the King's Flight and a standard trainer of WW11. Airspeed also made the Horsa glider used in D Day and Market Garden, but after Shute had left the firm.
The book unfortunately, doesn't mention any of this, or of Shute's time in developing special weaopons.
Still, like just about any of his books (except Mazaran and one other I won't mention ), this is well worth a listen.
