Guitarist Chris Cochrane and bassist Ann Rupel are widely known for their work with the avant-jazz/rock band Curlew, while harpist/sampler ace, Zeena Parkins has performed with the crème de la crème of New York City's downtown scene. Nonetheless, this rebel rousing quintet typifies lower Manhattan's often liberating modern jazz and rock movement via its playful abandon and wryly humorous escapades. This unit melds portions of urban folk, psychedelic, and free jazz improvisation with Sonic Youth-style droning rock chords and discordant themes. In addition, the soloists share vocal chores, although the somewhat arcane or tongue-in-cheek lyricism signifies the band's rather manic approach. Recorded live at New York City's Knitting Factory, the group displays a noticeable degree of artisanship amid a carefree disposition.
