and the countdown continues."
  
  
  American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4,
1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio. None of the Casey-announced Extras are
from the original show.
  
  There are 15 new songs since the last regular countdown which was suspended for 2
weeks to make way for the Top 40 hits of 1973 and The All-Time Christmas Countdown, which now float in cyber-space all
year round.
  
  David Beats Davis! Recount Request Possible: Casey sets the record straight concerning which
artist had the longest span of time between his first chart record and his first #1 hit. Casey previously reported it
was Sammy Davis Jr. (with 18 years and 2 months), but now all the polls are in and he declares orchestra leader David
Rose (with 18 years and 5 months) to be the winner. Howard K. Smith and Harry Reasoner are getting warmed up in the
bullpen.
  
  Mr. Casey reports "Hi Hi Hi" by Wings (at number 22) banned from BBC Radio because they think
the song is about drugs. Paul says that's nonsense, it's about sex! So Paul really isn't dead, huh?
  
  A
listener asks a loaded question; "What record stayed at number one the longest, not in all of chart history, but just
since Elvis began making hits?" Casey says it was a 1956, 2-sided hit by the King himself. Casey didn't read a different
letter wanting to know who's buried in Grant's Tomb!
  
  The new #1 song makes this only the 2nd time in
chart history that husband and wife each hit #1 with individual solo recordings. The first married husband and wife were
also the parents of Carrie Fisher, Princess Leia of Star Wars fame. Casey will tell you about everything else but that,
because it didn't happen yet.
  
  Finally, Brighter Side Of Darkness is at #32 with "Love Jones" while Billy
Paul is at #3 with "Me And Mrs. Jones" and this is why nobody in 1973 could keep up with the Jonses and where that
expression came from (but in later years, some White House officials did hide behind the Bushes).
